Seeking Safety: How Denninger & Philbeck Helps Victims of Domestic Violence
Advocates for Your Protection, Security, and Peace of Mind

If you or someone you love is being abused, threatened, or harassed by a current or former partner, spouse, or household member, you are not alone. And you have options. At Denninger & Philbeck, we represent victims of domestic violence who are seeking court-ordered protection and a path to safety.
We know how overwhelming and frightening this process can feel. Whether you are considering filing for a protective order or already in the middle of a legal proceeding, our attorneys are here to stand by your side and help you take back control.
What Is a Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVPO)?
In North Carolina, individuals who have experienced domestic abuse can seek a Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVPO)—also known as a 50B Order—under N.C.G.S. § 50B.
A 50B Order can:
- Order the abuser to stop contacting or harassing you
- Require the abuser to move out of your home (even if you live together)
- Grant you temporary custody of children
- Prohibit the abuser from possessing firearms
- Provide law enforcement assistance to help enforce the order
You may also qualify for an emergency (ex parte) order that provides immediate protection without the abuser being present. A full hearing will typically be held within 10 days to determine whether the order should remain in place for up to one year.
How Denninger & Philbeck Can Help
At Denninger & Philbeck, we understand how sensitive and urgent domestic violence cases are. We offer compassionate, swift, and strategic representation to help victims navigate the legal system and secure the protection they deserve.
Here’s how we help:
- Guide you through the process of filing a complaint for a 50B protective order
- Represent you at both the emergency and full court hearings
- Advocate for custody protections and exclusive possession of a shared residence
- Work to ensure that the order is enforced by law enforcement when necessary
- Explain your legal rights and help you plan for long-term safety
If your case involves stalking, harassment, or unwanted sexual advances by someone not in a personal or domestic relationship, we can also help you pursue a 50C Civil No-Contact Order under N.C.G.S. § 50C.
Support Services Through Helpmate and the Family Justice Center
In Buncombe County and the surrounding area, victims of domestic violence have access to valuable support through the nonprofit organization Helpmate, which works directly with survivors and families in crisis.
Helpmate offers:
- 24-hour hotline support
- Safety planning
- Emergency shelter
- Court accompaniment and advocacy
- Counseling and support groups
Helpmate operates on-site at the Family Justice Center and also maintains a presence on the second floor of the Buncombe County Courthouse, making it easier for victims to access help right where legal proceedings occur.
The Family Justice Center is a one-stop resource center designed to support victims of abuse, offering coordinated assistance from law enforcement, social workers, medical professionals, and advocates.
Why Legal Representation Matters
While Helpmate provides essential support and advocacy, only a licensed attorney can represent you in court. When you’re standing before a judge in a contested hearing, it is critical to have someone with courtroom experience and knowledge of the law arguing your case.
At Denninger & Philbeck, we combine legal skill with compassion and understanding. We take the time to listen to your story, understand your goals, and fight for the legal protection you need.
If you are a victim of domestic violence, you deserve to be safe, supported, and heard. Contact Denninger & Philbeck today for a free and confidential consultation. We’ll help you take the first step toward protection and peace.
